One of the biggest festivals in Europe: "Las San Fermines" takes place in Pamplona from 6 to 14 July. A delirium of eight days during which we run, dance and drink. The legendary encierro (bull release) is the highlight of the fiesta. Dressed in white with a belt and a red scarf, one delights in listening to the drums, bass drums, trumpets, trombones that punctuate the crowded streets. This joyful organized pagai is run by many "festayars" from all over the world.
In San Sebastian, Donostia in Basque, the Semana Grande takes place in mid-August. The whole town is celebrating for eight days. It is also the occasion of an international competition of fireworks. Every night, over the bay of La Concha, the best masters of the world present their spectacle. To do at least one evening to discover the evening potéo - tapas!
In Irun, the San Martial celebrations take place around June 30th. To discover the traditional alarde, a parade to the sound of the drums, txistu and thousands of shots fired in unison. In turn, parade every quarter with a procession composed of a cantiniere, infantry companies, soldiers, drum players, cavalers etc. This is to commemorate the victory of the inhabitants of Irun on the French troops in 1522.
Apart from these flagship events, life on the other side of the border is lively all year round. Irun, Hondarribia, San Sebastian and Bilbao are good places to go out with family or friends in the many lively bars that invite you to party. The occasion to chat leaning at the counter, nibbling delicious pintxos (small sandwiches garnished).
