A former trade relay on the road to Compostela, Ainhoa is characterized by the originality of its architecture, the beauty of its natural environment, its tradition of hospitality, and its gastronomic reputation.
Situated between the Nive Valley and the Navarra border, Ainhoa is ranked among the most beautiful villages in France. This 13th century bastide-street, created to welcome pilgrims on the way to Santiago de Compostela, combines the green of its hills with the white and red facades of its old houses. Aïnhoa diffuses a pleasant atmosphere in a setting of great beauty that one discovers by walking it on foot. Its large houses still retain large lorios (porches), attachment rings for mules, stables and on the first floor a large living room.
The secrets of Ainhoa and the border territory of Xareta are revealed all year round on a panoramic screen at the Maison du Patrimoine and in the countryside too! Indeed, beautiful walks offer you the opportunity to discover the Aubépine Chapel, the forest hut, the numerous streams and undergrowths without forgetting the pottok and other betizu (wild cow). A map of the 5 signposted hikes is sold at the tourist office.
